As Canadians celebrate the holiday season with gifts and feasts, Health Canada has issued a warning regarding a choking hazard posed by certain stuffed toys. On Christmas Eve, the agency announced a recall for 120 units of Mother and Baby plush toys sold by Chantia Sales, a Toronto-based company.
The recall affects elephant, giraffe, lion, tiger, and panda plush toys that feature both a mother and baby version. These toys, manufactured in China and sold in Canada between May 2023 and December 2024, were found to have hard plastic eyes that can detach, presenting a choking risk to young children. Health Canada’s testing revealed that the toys did not meet safety standards under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.
While no incidents or injuries had been reported as of December 16, Health Canada is urging consumers to stop using the affected toys immediately and return them for refunds. The recalled items carry the product number P273585 and UPC code 8140239986.
The recall comes amid the federal government’s two-month “tax holiday,” which includes children’s toys and other products, launched on December 14.
